Reporting multiple units of service

As we continue to transition to our next generation platform, we want to inform providers about how to appropriately report multiple units of service for applicable procedure codes.

Note: When the same CPT® or HCPCS code is reported on two or more lines, it may deny as a duplicate service.

It is common coding practice for some CPT or HCPCS codes to be submitted with multiple units of service. Providers should report multiple units of service for the same encounter and same date of service on a single claim line.

There are very limited circumstances when it is appropriate to list the same CPT or HCPCS on more than one claim line, such as:

  • When the service is administered at different locations
  • When services involve a repeat procedure during a separate encounter on the same day

In both examples above, an appropriate modifier is needed to delineate the reason for billing the same CPT or HCPCS code on multiple lines.
